Introduction

In this article, we will discuss what the IDV Platform is and what its core capabilities are. We will delve into the key terms for understanding how it functions such as:

What is IDV Platform?

The Regula Identity Verification (IDV) Platform is a turnkey solution for fast and reliable identity verification. It enables businesses to implement secure and compliant identity verification processes with minimal effort and maximum flexibility.

The IDV Platform addresses complex, multi-step, multi-component identity verification workflows. Unlike point solutions that handle single tasks, the IDV Platform supports complete end-to-end use cases.

The Platform enables a fully orchestrated solution that includes:

  • Centralized Data Hub: Store, manage, and keep identity information up to date
  • Integration: Built-in ID and facial verification technology; ability to integrate with any client or 3rd-party system or service
  • Scalability: Scale flexibly according to growth in load and data without performance losses
  • Customization: Flexible configuration to meet client-specific needs
  • Hardware Inclusive: Compatible with a wide variety of devices and data sources

Workflow

A Workflow is the core mechanism through which your identity verification business process is implemented in the Regula IDV Platform. It defines the full sequence of actions, both Person-driven and automated, that make up a verification scenario tailored to your needs.

A Workflow may include:

  • Person actions, such as scanning a document
  • Automated actions, such as sending or receiving data from a system
  • Checks, like document type validation, age verification, or regional compliance

In other words, a Workflow is the first step in constructing your business process:

Business process

For example, you can create a simple flow, which will include minimal setup involving basic checks and Person interaction, or an extended flow that is a more complex, multi-system orchestration with layered checks.

Session

A Session represents a single execution instance of a Workflow. It begins when a Person initiates a Workflow (for example, via a QR code in the demo app) and can end in one of the following ways:

  • Success
  • Failure
  • Abandonment (for example, timeout)
  • Termination (for example, manual stop or system error)

All outcomes and conditions are defined within the Workflow.

So, a Session is what you get when you use a Workflow to enroll or verify Persons:

User vs Person

Before diving into definitions, let's distinguish the key difference between a User and a Person. Understanding the difference is important because you’ll manage Users inside the Platform, but you’ll process and review Persons during verification Workflows.

A User is someone who works inside the IDV Platform, while a Person is someone whose identity data is being verified by the Platform.

Users are people who operate inside the IDV Platform (for example, admins or analysts). Persons are the individuals being verified by the Platform (for example, customers submitting identity documents).

Interaction with the Platform Interaction with data How their data is collected Representation
User Logs in to use the Platform and perform actions. Views, manages, and uses collected data. Entered manually when creating a User account, such as name and email. Has a Role and Permissions that define access.
Person Does not log in; only interacts by providing data. Has their data collected and stored. Submitted during identity verification (documents, biometrics). Has a Profile — a structured record of identity and verification data.

Profile

A Profile is a structured collection of Person data obtained during the identity verification process. It includes key personal attributes, identity documents processed with the Document Reader SDK, biometric data processed with the Face SDK, and any other related attachments.

Profiles maintain a complete history of a Person’s information, whether collected manually or automatically during a session. They enable consistent data reuse across Sessions and Workflows, reducing redundant input and improving verification efficiency:

Platform Portal

The Platform Portal is an optional built-in admin interface that helps you visualize and manage data flows through the Platform.

The Platform Portal can be used as a:

  • Data visualization tool
  • Workflow administration tool
  • Session and identity data management tool
  • Analytics platform
